The hike starts at the information sign below Helgfellsvöllur. Walk towards Hrafnaklettar and continue along the grass path up from the cliffs to the south to the roots of the volcano. There is a steep and a rough path up to the mountain.

Helgafell is 227 m high volcano southeast in Heimaey. The name of Helgafell is said to be from a Irish slave named Helgi. He fled after the slaying of Hjörleifur who was killed there by Ingólfur Arnason and his men. It is a common misconception that something is sacred at Helgafell.

The cairn on the edge of the cliff are remnants of the locals watch post which was set up after Tyrkjaránið of 1627.

The hike is ideal for families or those who do not have much experience of mountainhiking.

You are at your own risk.
