Implementation of a new waste sorting system
In autumn 2023, a new sorting system will be implemented in the Vestmannaeyjar, where four waste categories will be collected at each household.
Implementation of the new classification system will begin in autumn 2023 in Vestmannaeyjar, where four waste categories will be collected at each household. The categories are accompanied by FENÚR's markings that will apply to all classifications in Iceland, so all trash bins will receive new sticker markings. This is a major step forward in environmental and climate matters. It will be classified into the following categories:
- Food scraps
- Paper and cardboard
- Plastic packaging
- Mixed waste
The role of the recycling bin changes and only paper and cardboard go into it. Residents will therefore receive a new bin, marked for plastic. By sorting cardboard and plastic in separate bins, better sorting is achieved than with one bin where the categories are mixed together.
