Sýningin er ávöxtur af samtali tveggja listamanna, sýningastjóra og mannfræðings um sameiginlegan áhuga þeirra á Eldfelli, sem leiddi af sér samstarfsverkefni í tilefni 50 ára afmælis eldfjallsins.
Á sinni stuttu ævi hefur Eldfell og sagan um gosið veitt fólki um allan heim innblástur. Það hefur sótt eldfjallið heim, hvert á sínum forsendum, til að kynnast og upplifa þennan merka stað. Á sýningunni verður í fyrsta sinn dregið saman safn verka, bæði nýrra og eldri, eftir um tuttugu íslenska og erlenda listamenn, rithöfunda og fræðimenn sem hafa rannsakað Eldfell. Á sýningunni verða teikningar, málverk, textíll, ljósmyndir, þrykk, jarðfræðilegir skúlptúrar, kvikmyndir og ritaður texti.Íris Róbertsdóttir, bæjarstjóri, opnar sýninguna sem nær yfir þrjá sali safnsins og er ein af viðameiri sýningum safnsins í ár. The town of Vestmanneyjar invites you to the opening of A Meeting with Eldfell at Safnahús Vestmannaeyjar, Saturday Septerber 9th at 16. The exhibition emerged from an ongoing conversation between two artists, a curator and an anthropologist about their shared love of Eldfell, resulting in a collaborative project marking the 50th anniversary of the volcano's birth in 1973.Throughout its short geologic life, Eldfell and the story of its eruption has inspired people around the world. They have approached the volcano from their own perspectives, to get to know and sense this remarkable place. For this exhibition we will bring together, for the very first time, newly commissioned and existing work from over twenty Icelandic and international artists, writers and researchers exploring Eldfell. The exhibition will include drawings, paintings, textiles, photographs, prints, geologic sculptures, film, and text.Íris Róbertsdóttir, mayor of the town of Vestmannaeyjar, will open the exhibition that covers three of exhibition hall at the museum and is one of the museum's most extensive exhibitions this year.
